surprise karaoke

this happened the weekend after my birthday (since the official day was spent in Boston). a friend distracted me all afternoon then dragged me to a Pharmacy bar and then down the block to this gem of a karaoke bar called Muzette at 18th and Kalorama and everyone jumped and shouted when we got there. it was the fancy type with private rooms that kind of feels like a brothel and smells like bleach, and it was so fun! There was a remote control you could key in your songs and they would just start playing along with the super creepy videos that didn't make any sense. and there was a button on the wall that you pressed and bam! someone would come take your drink order. we need one of those at home. no but really, january is birthday month of death. my liver needs a break.

I was in Boston for a friend's wedding on my 30th birthday. but its cool because I got a new dress, and she got me a cake and had everyone sing happy birthday.

oh, and they had a SELF-SERVE TODDY BAR at the reception, with 1 bourbon, 1 whisky, and 1 scotch. so right. even though it turned out to be 50 degrees the first week in January. best bday/wedding party ever.

I went to LA last weekend for my cousin's wedding. I had never been to LA before really. I went to orange county once a couple years ago and like stalked all the places that KCav went on Laguna Beach. But this time I was in LA proper, so i made us go to all the other places i've heard about on TV. First night, we went to the Standard hotel which has a swanky/sleazy rooftop bar that smelled like stale vodka and drakkar noir. We also went to Melrose, and I dropped some serious cash that I don't have. What else, uh, we ate pastries and coffee, and went to the Grove shopping center (where I'm pretty sure I saw LC go on the Hills at some point), and ate mexican food at the Farmer's market. I don't have any good photos from the wedding but it was super fun. The brides and grooms families are Egyptian and Greek so there was like a lot of techno. Then the next morning we had epic greasy diner brunch at Nick's and then drove around Beverly Hills in the pouring rain looking for David Schwimmer's house. I tried to find the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf where Perez Hilton used to work out of, but we kept getting lost and finally had to go to the airport. fun.

Last week was long and busy with a bunch of informational interviews at a bunch of places that aren't hiring. i'm beginning to think I should start planning for a sad lazy winter spent job searching in pajammas on the couch in front of one tree hill repeats with whisky in my cocoa.

At least I got to go on another groupon vacation to Shenandoah country in Virginia. we went apple picking and local wine tasting and hiking in Sky Meadows State Park and saw cows and lamas and goats and freaking ostriches at the petting zoo down the road from our inn. We stayed at the kind of place where there's a bottle of champagne and truffles in your room when you check in. my kind of livin.

So here are some more photos from our trip to the Sonoma coast and Mendocino last weekend. I am addicted to groupons and also love planning out every second of fun, so we did a lot in 3 days and this is what we did. First groupon was for a wine tasting and winery tour at Iron Horse Vinyards in Sebastopol starting at 10am. This meant we started drinking champagne at like 10:15am. The deal included a free bottle to take, so we got one of their Russian Cuvee, which is the same sparkling white that Reagan served to Gorbachev at some summit, no biggie.

On the way out of the vinyard, we stopped the car so I could steal a million apples off a tree and totally got caught but the guy let me go prob because I sounded so pathetic: "but they're just falling off the treeeeeee." Whatever ima make a shit ton of apple butter. Then we drove to the Sonoma coast to Salt Point state park and camped at Gerstle Cove campground.

The forecast said sunny and low 70s. This was the actual weather at our campground.

We walked around the coast and looked at the beach in the fog and then went back to the campsite after a while to build a fire and drink beer and make smores and go to bed at 9pm. Then we woke up the next day and my entire body hurt because sleeping on the ground is hard when you're elderly and a princess, then we drove north on highway 1 and stopped to pose for photos looking super greasy and cracked.

Our second groupon was for a night at a fancy spa resort in Mendocino, but we couldn't check in until 4pm so we had lunch at Cafe Beaujolais and wandered around the town of Mendocino and bought fudge and looked in bookstores and went to some weird museum in an early settler's old house with a weird volunteer docent who was a member of the northern California mycological society and told us about hunting wild mushrooms. And we walked around the coast and took more photos.

Our room at the resort wasn't ready when we got there because they were installing a new $5000 king sized memory foam bed, so they let us sit at the bar and pour ourselves glass after glass of local wine. Poor us. I think my favorite part of the resort was eating delicious farm to table dinner with our bottle of Russian champagne and then going back to the room and watching Breaking Bad and eating red vines in bed with the heat on. The next morning after breakfast we each got spa treatments before we had to quickly drive back down to Berkeley in time for my class at 4. #whinecountry

these are from last weekend. here I am on another vacay reading ayn rand on the beach.

Montauk was like the ghetto hamptons, full of crusty fishermen and people from staten island. altho we saw like 6 ferraris and a lambo on the drive out.

We stayed in NYC for a night after we left long island, and saw cirque du soleil at radio city music hall.

I had a panic attack in the middle because like every act was someone balancing on one foot on ladder 100 feet over the stage and juggling. I have a problem with heights apparently.

Then on the last morning we went to Ess-a-Bagel in midtown and waited 45 goddamn minutes in line, but the bagels were the shit so it was ok.

Last time I was there, I had to run across the street to puke while Tosh waited in line. I'm in better control these days I like to think.

When we were in Williamsburg a few weeks ago, we went to the flea market and there were these hipsters selling "reclaimed" wood furniture with plumbing pipe legs for $1000s, we were like 'we can do that.' they even had a sign on their tent saying "no photos," like go fuck yourself hipsters, i don't want a photo of your stupid overpriced garbage table. so we came home and went to Home Depot and bought pipes and connectors and wood glue and walla, we have a dining table now.

Then we had friends over for brunch and made jalapeno cheesy grits and waffles on the waffle iron my mom sent me in the mail and drank red beer. our table looked very patriotic.

This is at brooklyn flea in Williamsburg on Sunday, where I got a cute little crystal salt and pepper shaker and sugar holder with a tiny spoon for the house, and also got totally sunburned down the part in my hair. On Saturday, we stood in line for 2 hours for the McQueen exhibit at the Met, which I think was pretty cool even though I don't know anything about fashion or art. We also shopped and took a nap in Central Park and ate at a posh restaurant and drank $15 speakeasy cocktails and had crispy eggs and jalapeno grits for brunch. AND I knocked off another 200 pgs of Atlas Shrugged on the Bolt bus to and from.

we had a groupon to fancy pantsy Brasserie Beck on saturday night before the theater. we biked, and i got really sweaty and took off my belt and my shoes at the table. the food and wine were the bomb though, and surprisingly versatile for veggie eaters given i always think belgian food is smelly mussels and sugary beer.

then we had cheapo tickets to the Shakespeare Theater. we saw the Merchant of Venice, which, hello, is anti-semitic like whoa. i think i can handle shakespeare more than modern theater bc i can't understand 90% of the words. otherwise i just get embarrassed.

Battle LA from redbox on Mon, which was like a cross between Independence day and Black Hawk Down.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at NoMa summer screen on Weds.

Dragonslayer on Friday was OK, but the fried pickles at Quarry House were better. Then sunday we saw Life in a Day, which was a cool idea but kinda gruesome and queasy-making from the handheld cam. We had to leave just as people were being crushed at the LoveParade in 2010, ick.

My grandfather died this past Monday. He was pretty special to me, and it was a hard experience to see him in a state other than smiling, shuffling around, with his pants hiked up to his neck, telling me that whatever I was up to was great as long as I was challenging myself and enjoying it. He was a docent at the Nelson Atkins museum of art in Kansas City for 20 years, and when I was little and visiting from Sacramento, he used to take me on private tours and we would count the dragons in the ceiling of the Asian art room. Then we'd go to Winsteads and I would get a chocolate coke and he would tell the waitress I was his California girl. Each year at Passover seder, when it came time for the kids to hunt for the affikomen, he would give the winner as a prize crisp $1 bills that he'd peel off from a little pad like a flip book that he'd get special at the bank. I've never seen anyone else with those money pads. The man got manicures into his 90's. Oh and that photo is gramps at his 90th birthday party a few years ago next to his portrait by Andy Warhol. At his funeral, my dad placed a highball glass of Crown Royal on the rocks on a stand with flowers next to his casket. That was gramps.

i spent the week in DC for a super fun birthday surprise, and I really really really really didn't want to come back to California and school and the last 3 shitty work-crunched weeks of school. everything great happened this trip. we went to NYC for the weekend and ate all the best pizza, drank all the beers, shopped all the shops, looked at all the tiny dogs.

then we came back to DC and had more pizza and banana cake and saw good friends. And we got iced coffee at Big Bear during one of the sunny moments in an otherwise bitchy ass week of weather.

Also, we finished the first disc of season 5 of Friday Night Lights, which started off slow, but seems to promise some decent dramz.

can't wait to get back home.

its spring break and me and Tosh are stuck in tahoe bc they closed highway 80 from colfax to the nevada state line. on wed we went snowboarding.

when we got here on tues night the snow was still below the top of the door frame.

last night we went into town to the video store to get horror movies and we also got pizza at the restaurant by the entrance to the highway that's just called "pizza" with the p burnt out of the sign. I got a Mr. Pibb.

then the car got stuck in the snow on the way back a few blocks from my house. we tried shoveling it out for like half and hour and finally abandoned it and made the harrowing, life-threatening trek on foot the 1/8 of a mile to my house through 3 feet drifts of snow. there was a moment when i thought we weren't going to make it, seriously. tosh wasn't even wearing a coat or gloves. i kept shrieking "almost there!" even tho i knew we weren't because i could sense the lifeforce leaving his body. when we got home, i called every snow removal number i could to see if they could come dig out my car until i got this guy on the line who i'm pretty sure was an actual serial murderer who asked if i had any other girls with me. I politely declined his services. then we made toddies and watched the new nightmare on elm street where freddy is played by that ugly guy jackie joel haley or whatever his name is from breaking away and human target. we also watched one called Mirrors with keifer sutherland which made me scared to look in mirrors all night. then we got up this morning and shoveled the car out and now we're eating eggs and waiting for them to open the highway.

rainy bay weekend

we went to point reyes this weekend, and it was very rainy. first we went to the cowgirl creamery in point reyes station where we got a disappointing cheeseplate and a pretty solid root beer float. then we drove all the way out to the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula (which is on a different tectonic plate as the rest of california!) but we weren't allowed down the 300 steps to the actual lighthouse because the wind was over 30mph.

we also saw a lot of cows and elk, but i didn't get any pics. then we drove back into the city.

next we had a groupon to go to a fancy wine tasting at Cellar 360 at Ghirardelli Square where we got cheeseplate #2. that's alcatraz and a tall ship near the wharf outside the window.

lastly we got deepdish pizza at Little Star in Albany (cheeseplate #3), and fell asleep in our old speckled hens at the Pub.

this morning i woke up with gnarly snot face so i took a Wall-a-tin D which is the wallgreens version of claratin except they add crack to it because i drank 2 cups of coffee and started programming some bullshiz for work and looked up 7 hrs later and it was dark and i'd missed my class and i hadn't eaten anything and i'd listened to merriweather post pavillion about 40 times on repeat. and walla! i created facebook! j/k, i made some crappy tables.

i got a new job for the semester in Sacramento, so i went there on Friday. and guess what? Its like mini-DC! All the streets are lettered, everyone works in policy, and they even have a mall.

also great? going to in-and-out burger on the way back.

Barbados

Barbados was so awesome you guys. We snorkeled in the ocean and visited a sugar plantation and ate flying fish sandwiches and saw 2 monkeys! Also, we brought back 100 gallons of Mt. Gay rum from the duty free store and had a luau with pina coladas and rum punch and rihanna and rod stewart, which somehow turned into a 4loko party. even that was awesome.

so i went home to kansas city for thanksgiving and this came on the radio as i was driving around the suburbs in my moms car.
